It was a routine victory on home soil for us in yesterday’s clash with bottom of the league Litherland REMCYA. Two more goals from Lewis Byrne takes him up to an astonishing thirty-six goals so far in this campaign.
We established our intentions early, putting the pressure immediately onto the opposition with the majority of the game being played in their half, we attempted to use the wingers and deliver the ball inro the danger zone, but to his credit, the away goalkeeper patrolled his box very well in the opening stages.
In the sixteenth minute, Lewis did have the ball in the back of the net for the first time, taking it around the goalkeeper and placing it in the back of the net, but the linesman’s flag was up for offside, and the goal was ruled out. Litherland would also have a goal ruled out a few minutes later after they bundled the ball home from a cross.
Ten minutes later, we would be awarded a penalty after Tyler Berry played through Rob Flynn who was pulled back as he was about to shoot, after mass appeal from the Litherland defenders, who believed Rob was offside, Lewis Byrne stepped up to the spot and sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to put us into the lead.
Lewis would go onto double our lead just before the half time interval, He gets onto the end of a long ball over the top, once again rounds the goalkeeper and converts, but this time it stands, and we lead by two going into the break.
The second half was largely uneventful, but that was precisely what was required as we saw the result over the line and gained an important three points, many thanks to a defensive masterclass from our man of the match, Eddy Goddard. This win takes us just one point off Burscough in the play off spots, with four games in hand. We look to take the momentum of this victory into Tuesday’s away trip to Longridge Town.
